Tras los candentes enfrentamientos ante rivales internacionales en SuperLiga, Chivas USA entrará este próximo martes nuevamente al ámbito internacional cuando enfrente al Tauro F.C. en la primera edición de la CONCACAF Liga Campeones, donde el ganador se adjudicará el derecho de representar a la región en el Mundial de Clubes de la FIFA 2009.
“Es un torneo muy importante en el que Chivas USA entra no solamente para competir sino que también para ganar, primero vamos a pensar en pasar en la primera ronda… sabemos que será un equipo muy duro”, explicó el experimentado mediocampista brasileño Paulo Nagamura.
La CONCACAF Liga Campeones será el segundo torneo internacional que disputará Chivas USA en 2008 después de jugar la SuperLiga, donde terminó con un récord de 1-1-1 y no pudo clasificar a las Semifinales del mencionado torneo. El martes, Chivas USA sostendrá su primer partido oficial a nivel internacional fuera de los Estados Unidos al visitar en el partido de ida al Tauro F.C. en el Estadio Rod Carew de Panamá.
“Van a venir equipos de todos estos equipos de América central, de América del norte. Es un torneo muy fuerte con los mejores equipos de esos países, entonces es un torneo muy importante… muy grande para Chivas USA y para un equipo de la MLS”, agregó Nagamura.
Otros, como Lawson Vaughn y Bobby Burling, esperan que el nivel de la CONCACAF Liga Campeones incremente el nivel de Chivas USA en la liga y lo ayude de cara al cierre de la temporada regular.
“Al igual que SuperLiga creo que incrementa la intensidad y nos hace pensar en un ritmo de playoffs, el jugar a nivel internacional, nos hace estar listos para los siguientes juegos en la liga”, expresó Vaughn.
“Como en SuperLiga, fue una gran experiencia para nosotros, vamos a querer obtener el trofeo, queremos avanzar”, declaró Burling.
Con apenas unas horas de descanso tras el juego del sábado por la noche, los jugadores de Chivas USA se levantaron muy temprano en la mañana para abordar un avión rumbo a la Ciudad de Panamá, lugar donde nacerá a partir del próximo martes la ilusión de la CONCACAF Liga Campeones. El Rebaño enfrentará al Tauro F.C. de Panamá en el partido de ida de la Ronda Preliminar del mencionado torneo. Ocho días después, Chivas USA recibirá la visita del cuadro panameño en El Home Depot Center de Carson, para definir un cupo a la Fase de Grupos del torneo.Con mínimo conocimiento del poderío de su próximo rival y de las condiciones en las que se enfrentarán, como clima y condiciones de la cancha, los jugadores de Chivas USA aceptaron saber poco o nada de su rival caribeño.
“No sabemos mucho del oponente, pero vamos a ir ahí para ganar… estamos muy emocionados. Aunque estemos aquí tan temprano. Es un día muy largo de viaje pero esperemos descansar una vez que estemos ahí y entrenar mañana”, expresó el defensa Bobby Burling, uno de los elementos más jóvenes del cuadro rojiblanco.
“Estaba hablando con muchos de los muchachos y nadie sabe nada de ellos, pero creo que va ser interesante y emocionante”, añadió Burling.
Después de empatar a cero tantos ante los Terremotos de San José el sábado por la noche, Chivas USA debutará el martes en el Estadio Rod Carew de la Ciudad de Panamá a partir de las 5:00 p.m. Hora del Pacífico (En vivo por Galavisión, diferido a las 7:00 p.m. PT en FSC). “No. No conozco a ninguno de sus jugadores, tampoco conozco su estilo de juego”, reconoció el también defensa Lawson Vaughn, quien después de estar ausente en el partido del sábado por la noche ante los Terremotos de San José, emprendió el viaje y es uno de los regresos esperados ante Tauro F.C., junto con el delantero Alecko Eskandarian.El estadio panameño es también otra interrogante para el Cuerpo Técnico y jugadores, pues lo único que se sabe es que hubo un concierto el sábado pasado en el estadio (de béisbol) y las condiciones del césped no serían las ideales.
Otros, como el mismo Jorge Flores, quien regresó al equipo titular el sábado ante San José, señalaron que Panamá será una aventura, pues para muchos será terreno desconocido.
“Nunca he conocido Panamá, hasta que lo voy a conocer y que mejor que ir a jugar futbol”, declaró Flores.
Chivas USA travels to Panama
Chivas USA players and Coaching Staff traveled early Sunday morning to Panama City, where they will face Tauro F.C. on Tuesday at 5:00 p.m. PT (Live on Galavision, 7:00 p.m. tape delayed on FSC) as part of the CONCACAF Champions League’s Preliminary Round.
Chivas USA played the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday night and with very little time to sleep, players had to take a plane to Panama to face an unknown opponent.
“I don’t know much about the opponent we are playing but going down there, we are looking for the win obviously. I think everybody is excited, despite how early we are here… we want to win the trophy, we want to advance”, said Chivas USA defender Bobby Burling.
“I was talking to a couple of the guys and nobody knew much about Tauro, it’s going to be interesting and we are excited”, he added.
“I think it’s a cool experience to travel to Panama. I’ve never been there. I was thinking about a minute ago about adding another country to the list where I’ve been to”, said Chivas USA defender Lawson Vaughn.
“I have no idea about this team or any of their players. I don’t even know their style of play in Panama. It should be a good test for us… the intensity of play is different and it helps us to raise our level of play where we need to play at… it helps us mentally”, he added.
Regional bragging rights are on the line as Chivas USA looks to advance to the Group Stage of the inaugural CONCACAF Champions League, which pits the best teams in North and Central America and the Caribbean against each other for a spot in the 2009 FIFA Club Word Cup.
The decisive return leg of the two-game series against Tauro F.C. is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 7:00 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center. On a warm, clear Saturday night in Carson, Chivas USA and the San Jose Earthquakes battled to a 0-0 tie in front of 12,209 fans at The Home Depot Center.
The draw gives each team a point, and moves the Red-and-White (6-9-6, W-L-T) into fourth place in the Western Conference, tied on 24 points with the LA Galaxy and the Colorado Rapids. The Earthquakes (5-9-7) remain two points back of Chivas USA in seventh place in the West.
Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton, making his fifth start for the club, earned his first shutout with his new team, making three saves to preserve the clean sheet. His diving stop on a Ronnie O’Brien shot in the 85th minute ensured a point for the Red-and-White.
A new-look line-up for Chivas USA featured Jonathan Bornstein playing on the right side of defense for the first time since last season, and gave midfielder Jorge Flores his first start since June 5 against the New York Red Bulls. Right midfielder Kraig Chiles made his second start of the season, and Sacha Kljestan returned from the Olympics and National Team duty to play 90 minutes in the center of the midfield, his first match with the team since July 20 in the SuperLiga and his first time wearing the captain’s armband for Chivas USA.
Two forwards also returned from injury to play a part for the Red-and-White, as Ante Razov made his first appearance in more than a month, playing 90 minutes, and Alecko Eskandarian (sports hernia surgery, June 18) entered the match as a substitute in the 59th minute, and came close to scoring his second goal of the season.
The team will depart LAX at 8:00 a.m. PT Sunday morning for Panama City, where the Red-and-White will play the first match of their 2008-09 CONCACAF Champions League campaign. Chivas USA will square off against Tauro F.C. of Panama on Tuesday night at 5:00 p.m. PT, broadcast live on Galavision. On a cloudy Wednesday night at Robertson Stadium, Chivas USA fell 4-0 to the Houston Dynamo in front of 10,908 fans in Houston, Texas.
With the result, Chivas USA remains in sixth place in MLS’s Western Conference, with a record of 6-9-5 (W-L-T) and 23 points, while Houston now has 32 points and improves its record to 8-4-8 (W-L-T) in first place in the Western Conference.
Chivas USA allowed four goals in 24 minutes during the first half. Houston’s Stuart Holden scored in the 11th minute, Kei Kamara added another goal at the 22nd minute, Nate Jaqua scored one more six minutes later, and Kamara scored again (35’) for a 4-0 lead before halftime.
Chivas USA made two substitutions at the beginning of the second half: Kraig Chiles for Paulo Nagamura and Eric Ebert for Claudio Suarez, who played again after the head injury he suffered in Chicago on August 2nd. Midfielder Carey Talley left the game early (13th minute) with a thigh injury and was replaced by Keith Savage.
Due to World Cup qualifying games, midfielder Sacha Kljestan (U.S. National Team) missed the match, as well as three Houston players (Dwayne De Rosario, Pat Onstad, and Brian Ching). Chivas USA currently has a total of 11 players listed on its injury report, and was without several key players, including Justin Braun (R ankle sprain), Jesse Marsch (fractured jaw), Lawson Vaughn (R knee sprain), Raphaël Wicky (R ankle surgery), and Alex Zotinca (R knee ACL surgery).
The Red-and-White continues its winless streak at Robertson Stadium, where it has never won and owns now a record of 0-5-2 (W-L-T), including playoffs.

El experimentado defensa internacional, Claudio Suárez, aseguró el martes a su llegada a Houston que los enfrentamientos ante el Dynamo son de gran rivalidad y siempre hay una “gran pasión por quererles ganar”.
Chivas USA enfrentará el miércoles a Houston en Robertson Stadium (6 p.m. Hora del Pacífico, Azteca 54), en lo que será la segunda y última visita del Rebaño al cuadro naranja en la presente temporada regular. La cita previa fue el 3 de mayo pasado cuando Chivas USA arrancó un empate a cero tantos en el Roberston Stadium.
“Estos partidos son de los buenos, son de los que te crean esa pasión…Cada partido han sido partidos intensos. Ellos ya tienen muchos años jugando juntos. Tienen un buen entrenador. La cancha de Houston les favorece, es una cancha angosta, ellos ya están muy bien adaptados”, analiza Suárez, un hombre que en el partido anterior ante Houston en Robertson Stadium salió expulsado tras cometerle una falta a Brian Mullan al minuto 82.
Tras recibir un golpe severo en la cabeza en el juego ante el Fire, el defensa central entrenó por semana y media y no volvió a tocar el balón hasta asegurarse que estuviera al cien por ciento físicamente. Suárez viajó ayer con el equipo y espera con ansias formar parte del once inicial de Chivas USA ante Houston, en una rivalidad que crece cada vez más.
“Nos tocó jugar en las finales contra ellos en mi primer año con Chivas USA. Al último de ese partido se citaron algunas cosas… nos dolió mucho esa derrota y después de eso siempre te preparas para no volver a perder. En el torneo pasado, en el partido decisivo peleamos para ver quien quedaba en el primer puesto de la zona y con el empate fue suficiente para nosotros y quedamos primeros y ellos quedaron molestos”, recuerda “El Emperador”:
“Siempre venimos con ese propósito de ganar los tres puntos. Ellos tienen unas ausencias y eso lo podemos aprovechar”, finalizó el mexicano.
Otra mentalidad
Tras el lamentable empate conseguido ante el Galaxy la semana pasada, Chivas USA aterrizó la tarde del martes en Houston con la mentalidad totalmente concentrada en darle un giro total a la presente campaña y buscar la clasificación rumbo a los playoffs.
“Estamos mentalizados y pensando en el partido de mañana que es bastante importante”, expresó el delantero mexicano de Chivas USA, Roberto Nurse, tras su llegada al aeropuerto de la ciudad tejana.
…Confía en su suerte
Nurse explicó que se sentía contento con su última participación ante el Galaxy pero que no estaba satisfecho aún, ya que todavía no se ha podido presentar en el marcador.
“He tenido oportunidad de poder anotar pero he quedado cerca. Tengo la confianza que podré anotar y ayudar al equipo con goles”, dijo el mexicano.
Razov viaja
Con la presencia de Jonathan Bornstein, Claudio Suárez y Ante Razov en Houston, tres ausencias importantes ante el Galaxy la semana pasada, el Rebaño pretende lograr su primera victoria en la historia en Houston ante el Dynamo.
“Ellos son un buen equipo. Tenemos muchos lesionados pero vamos a mantenernos unidos en los próximos juegos”, señaló Razov, quien en sus últimos seis encuentros lleva igual número de anotaciones en partidos de campeonato de la MLS y en SuperLiga. Sin embargo, una lesión de rodilla lo alejó de las canchas, algo que le dolió mucho al goleador estadounidense.
“La lesión no pudo llegar en un peor momento. Me había sentido muy bien, como no lo había sentido desde hace mucho. Había mostrado que estaba en buena forma. Ojalá y pueda regresar de nuevo y seguir igual”, agregó el artillero de Chivas USA.
Mayen regresa
El mediocampista de Chivas USA, Gerson Mayen, quien todavía no debuta en la presente temporada pero que ha tenido actividad en las selecciones menores de los Estados Unidos, regresó esta semana de Sunrise, Florida, donde se concentró con la selección Sub-20 para dos en encuentros de preparación ante Guatemala.
Mayen participó en los dos encuentros, al salir en el primero por lesión durante los primeros minutos y luego jugó todo el segundo encuentro ante los chapines. Estados Unidos empató el primer encuentro 0-0 y luego perdió 0-1 el segundo. La Sub-20 se prepara para el Mundial de esa categoría el próximo año en Egipto.

On a warm evening in front of a packed house of 27,000 fans at The Home Depot Center, Chivas USA and the LA Galaxy earned a 2-2 draw on Thursday night in the third and final Honda Super Clásico of 2008.
The Red-and-White’s attempt at its second-ever come-from-behind victory was thwarted by Alan Gordon’s 92nd-minute goal. Chivas USA had fallen behind in the 8th minute of the game on a Landon Donovan tally but battled back to a 2-1 lead by on goals by Atiba Harris (50’) and Paulo Nagamura (63’).
With the result, Chivas USA improves its record to 6-8-6 (W-L-T) and, with 23 points, maintains its fifth-place standing in MLS’s Western Conference, just four points behind the first-place Real Salt Lake. The Galaxy, however, claimed the 2008 Honda Super Clásico trophy by virtue of their 5-2 win over Chivas USA in the first game of the three-game series.
Chivas USA MF Jesse Marsch was diagnosed with a fractured jaw late Thursday night after receiving a blow to the face from the Galaxy’s Sean Franklin in the final quarter-hour of the match. No card was shown on the play, and Chivas USA, which had used its three substitutions just seconds earlier, was forced to play the rest of the game with 10 men.
Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on Thursday’s match: “At the end of the day, I’m really, really proud of my group. We played like 10 lions, or like 10 hurt lions, and I’ve got to tip my hat to them.
