In a night when Mexican midfielder Francisco Mendoza became the first player in franchise history to play 100 regular-season games with Chivas USA, the Red-and-White fell short and lost 3-2 against the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday night in front of 9,597 fans at CommunityAmerica BallPark in Kansas City.
The result left the Red-and-White with a record of 6-8-4 (W-L-T) and 22 pts, in fifth place in the Western Conference, one point behind the LA Galaxy, Chivas USA’s next opponent on Thursday night at The Home Depot Center.
Kansas City’s Sasha Victorine scored the first goal of the match at the 22nd minute of play and Claudio Lopez added the second one 22 minutes later to give the home team the lead at halftime. Davy Arnaud scored the third and decisive goal of the match at the 58th minute. Chivas USA came back in the second half with goals from Carey Talley (72nd) and Justin Braun (82nd) but it wasn’t enough to get the tie.
The Red-and-White were missing several players due to injury: FW Ante Razov (L knee sprain); FW Alecko Eskandarian (sports hernia surgery); FW Maykel Galindo (sports hernia surgery); MF Jonathan Bornstein (left thigh strain); DF Claudio Suarez (concussion); MF Jorge Flores (right ankle); DF Alex Zotinca (R knee ACL surgery); and MF Raphael Wicky (R ankle surgery).
Chivas USA FW Roberto Nurse made his MLS debut and recorded his second team appearance after playing with the Red-and-White in SuperLiga against Santos Laguna on July 16th. FW Justin Braun (L knee contusion) made his first appearance since the game against the LA Galaxy on July 10th.
Midfielder Paulo Nagamura missed the match due to a yellow-card accumulation suspension.
Head Coach Preki served the second game of a two-match suspension and will be at the bench against the LA Galaxy on Thursday.
Chivas USA wore for the first time in the season its second uniform: white and red stripes with white shorts and white socks.
Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on Saturday’s match: “We had a very descent second half, at the end we were very unlucky not the take a point because after being 3-2 we had two or three chances to get the tie. Kevin [Hartman] made very good saves. I think our team showed a lot of character, we went up and down, we didn’t quit. We created chances.”
The Red-and-White will return home on Thursday, August 14 for the final Honda Super Clásico of the regular season, against the Los Angeles Galaxy at 8:00 p.m PT.
Sinceramente no. Nunca. Yo nunca me imaginaba cumplir el partido número 100 aquí en Chivas pero que bien que se me da en una institución que quiero mucho, yo me lo imaginaba en el Home Depot pero hay que festejar y hay que complementarlo eso contra el Galaxy.
Chivas USA’s Shavar Thomas smiles when he remembers Kansas City, a place where he spent three years of his MLS career. On Friday, the Jamaican defender returned to the City of Fountains with one thing in mind: getting three points.“I played three wonderful years in Kansas City. We won the Open Cup and finished second in the league to D.C. But now, it’s all about Chivas and what we do in the game. We need to win and get back on track,” said Thomas, who arrived with the rest of his teammates Friday afternoon in the Show Me State, where they will face the Wizards on Saturday at 7:00 p.m. CT / 5:00 p.m. PT at CommunityAmerica Ballpark (TV: FSN Prime Ticket, KAZA Azteca 54; Radio: W Radio 690 AM).
“It’s a very important game. They’re a very good team. They have very good players. We are expecting a great challenge,” said Thomas.
Added Chivas USA defender Carey Talley, who spent two years with Wizards (2002-2003): “It’s always nice to come back to a place where you played… I’m going to see a couple of guys that played with me.”
“I’m very happy about it. I’ve been working very hard … now I have to take advantage of the opportunity,” said Nurse, who made his Chivas USA debut in SuperLiga against Mexican champion Santos.

“I enjoy watching it… I hope the U.S. gets back on track in basketball”, said defender Jim Curtin, who says he enjoys several Olympic disciplines, such as soccer and basketball. “I don’t follow up a lot on the obscure ones such as judo but I do follow [the Olympics] a lot.”
Said forward forward Atiba Harris: “I watch athletics, especially. There are runners from Saint Kitts and Nevis representing [my] country… Whenever it’s time for those races, I go and watch them all.”

This weekend, Guadalajara native and Chivas Racing’s driver Antonio Pérez will be in Watkins Glen, New York, for the NASCAR Nationwide Series race, the Zippo 200. The race is one of the most important on the Nationwide Series calendar, and takes place at a track where Pérez has enjoyed some success.
At the beginning of June, Pérez took part in a race at Watkins Glen as part of the NASCAR Camping World Series, and earned pole position at the race due to his excellent qualifying time, which also broke the course record. In the race on June 8, Pérez was in position to capture another win but mechanical problems on the final lap dropped him to 10th position.
Below is a photo of Pérez after winning the pole for the June race.
The Zippo 200 will be broadcast live on ABC this Saturday at 3:00 p.m. ET (12:00 noon PT).
Chivas USA midfielder Sacha Kljestan played the full 90 minutes for the United States Olympic Team on Thursday in the squad’s 1-0 victory over Japan in the opening match of the Beijing Games for both players.
Kljestan had his thoughts on the match, explaining what the team needed to do after heading into the locker room at halftime with the game tied 0-0:
“I think we needed to settle the game down a little bit and keep the ball more to make them run more, not make us run. In a game like that you need to have possession more than half the time to not kill yourself. I think we did that after we scored the goal. We made them run a bit and obviously when it got late in the game they started throwing everybody forward and it was tough, but we battled. I have so much respect for our team because we fought so hard tonight.”
“It was awesome,” Sacha said, talking about the experience as a whole. “This is the best feeling in the world. It’s crazy out there just knowing everybody is watching and knowing this is the Olympics, what we’ve worked so hard for. To get a victory is so wonderful right now. We feel really good about the team.”
A couple of his teammates from Chivas USA also saw the match, which was broadcast at 2:00 a.m. on the West Coast.
“Most guys had pretty good games,” said Red-and-White midfielder Jesse Marsch. “It could have gone either way. Sacha, when he plays in the middle, has to do a few more responsible things, but when he needed to make some tackles, he made some tackles … I still thought that he helped the team in many ways.”
Chivas USA defender Jim Curtin also saw the game, and thought it was a close matchup. “Overall, it was a good team effort. They kind of got a little fortunate – they dodged two bullets. Japan could have gone ahead… they pressured Japan a lot.”
