Chivas USA fell 1-0 tonight at Toyota Park in the second group game of SuperLiga 2009, the tournament which pits Major League Soccer and Mexican First Division teams against each other for bragging rights and one of the biggest purses in the region. The Fire’s Justin Mapp scored the game’s only goal in the 35th minute, following several failed clearance attempts by the Chivas USA defense.
Chivas USA returns to Southern California for the decisive third group game in SuperLiga, when the Red-and-White host Mexican club San Luis this Saturday, June 27 at The Home Depot Center. Kickoff is 7:00 p.m. PT and tickets, starting at just $15, are available by calling 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or visiting cdchivasusa.com.
To advance to the SuperLiga semifinals, Chivas USA will need to defeat San Luis of Mexico this Saturday, while depending on a series of other results to advance – the first of which is a San Luis victory over Tigres UANL at Toyota Park tonight in the evening’s second game of the SuperLiga doubleheader. (Tigres and San Luis were tied 0-0 as of halftime of tonight’s match).

Chivas USA faces Chicago in SuperLiga

After dropping a tight 2-1 game to Tigres UANL of Mexico, Chivas USA travels to face the Chicago Fire in SuperLiga 2009 this Tuesday night at 5:00 p.m. PT (7:00 p.m. CT), in a match broadcast live on TeleFutura and ESPN Deportes Radio. Chicago is currently tied with Tigres atop Group A in the tournament, and Tuesday’s match will be the second of the season between Chivas USA and the Fire, after Chicago earned a 3-2 win over the Red-and-White on May 28.

After Tuesday night’s game, Chivas USA will close the group stage of SuperLiga 2009 with a home match against San Luis on Saturday, June 27, at 7:00 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center. Tickets for the San Luis match, as well as special 2- and 3-Game Packs that include the SuperLiga game and the July 11 Honda Super Clásico vs. the LA Galaxy, are available by calling 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or via cdchivasusa.com.

Ahead of Tuesday’s SuperLiga match against the Chicago Fire, Chivas USA held its final training Monday evening at the University of Illinois at Chicago. After landing Sunday night in the Windy City, the Red-and-White held a light practice session, including a series of possession drills and small-sided games.

Chivas USA fell by a 2-1 score to Tigres UANL of the Mexican First Division in the opening match of SuperLiga 2009 for both teams. A goal in the 82nd minute from Jesus Dueñas gave Tigres the win, which tied the Mexican club for first place in Group A with the Chicago Fire, who beat San Luis 1-0 also on Saturday night.

Chivas USA midfielder Michael Lahoud scored his first professional goal to tie the game at one the 55th minute for the Red-and-White, finishing at the far post off a ball played by midfielder Bojan Stepanovic. Tigres had opened the scoring in minute 11 when Armando Pulido scored on a bicycle kick from 15 yards.
The Red-and-White were forced to play the final 23 minutes of the match down a man after forward Eduardo Lillingston received his second yellow card for a foul in midfield. Lillingston will miss Chivas USA’s next SuperLiga match, this Tuesday at the Chicago Fire.
Chivas USA has two matches left in the group stage of SuperLiga 2009, with the first coming this Tuesday in Chicago against the Fire, and the final match of the stage against Mexico’s San Luis next Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. at The Home Depot Center.
Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on tonight’s match: “You want to win every time you step on the field, and in the meantime you’ve got to give an opportunity to some of the younger guys. Some of our younger guys in the second half came in, [Michael] Lahoud and Jorge Flores, and they gave us some energy, so we are looking forward to getting some more of that. Chivas USA opens its second consecutive participation in SuperLiga tomorrow, facing Tigres UANL of the Mexican First Division at 7:00 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif.
