Chivas USA goalkeeper Zach Thornton was named to the 2009 MLS All-Star team on Sunday, earning a sixth nomination to the All-Star team, and first since 2003. We were able to catch up with him on the phone from Salt Lake City ahead of Wednesday’s game against Everton FC to ask him a few questions about the game, his season, past All-Star games, and his friend and current Everton goalkeeper, Tim Howard.

You found out on Sunday that you were named to the 2009 MLS All-Star Team, the sixth All-Star nomination of your career. How does it feel to make that squad?

It’s a great honor to be nominated, not only for myself but also for the Chivas organization and my teammates… because we have done some good things. So I’m happy. It’s definitely a nice honor.

You’re the only Chivas USA player on the roster for the game; what’s it like being the only representative for the club in Salt Lake City?

Well, there should’ve been more! But unfortunately I’m the only one. I’m happy that somebody did make it, and I’m happy and proud to represent Chivas in the All-Star game.

Chivas USA’s Jorge Flores scored twice as the U.S. U-20 Men’s National Team opened the Copa Ciudad de Rosario with a 2-0 win against C.A. Tiro Federal.

Flores’ first goal came in the 19th minute as a result of a well-played cross from defender Sheanon Williams. Williams’ ball was placed right in front of goal and forward Brian Ownby challenged the goalkeeper in the air just enough to force him to mishandle the ball. Flores had kept his run alive and was there for the touch in.

Late in the game, a pair of substitutes set up Flores second goal as Michael Stephens won the ball along the right sideline and quickly played it ahead to Fuad Ibrahim. Ibrahim carried the ball to the top of the box and dished it to his left, where Flores was making a run into the box. The Chivas USA midfielder struck a one-time laser high into the near post in the 83rd minute.

Chivas USA’s Gerson Mayén also participated in the match at the 70th minute of play when he substituted Sam Garza.

The Copa Ciudad de Rosario includes two international games for Thomas Rongen’s squad in its last training camp before the FIFA U-20 World Cup kicks off in September. The U.S. will face Uruguay on July 27 and Australia on July 29 before departing Rosario on July 30.

El mediocampista brasileño Marcelo Saragosa hizo un trabajo ligero en su primer día de entrenamiento con Chivas USA y habló a su llegada sobre el conjunto rojiblanco.

Saragosa, de 27 años, es originario de Campo Grande, Brasil, donde fue parte de las escuelas de São Paulo FC desde la edad de 13 años. Saragosa jugó con el equipo por 9 años y tuvo entre sus compañeros en ese entonces al actual mediocampista de Chivas USA, Paulo Nagamura, y al seleccionado brasileño Kaká.

Chivas USA is currently in a break from game action, with nearly three weeks off before the team’s next match, on Aug. 8 at the Colorado Rapids. Before that match, the team will be training at The Home Depot Center (see the team’s schedule below for times and locations for the coming week). The match in Colorado will be the second of three straight road matches, a run that started this past Sunday with a 2-0 loss at the New England Revolution, and concludes on Aug. 15 at the New York Red Bulls. The team then returns home against Toronto FC on Saturday, Aug. 22 at 7:30 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center. Los jugadores de Chivas USA Jorge Flores, Gerson Mayén y César Zamora fueron seleccionados para integrarse a la selección nacional Sub-20 de los Estados Unidos, dirigida por Thomas Rongen para un campamento de 10 días en Argentina, la cual iniciará mañana, martes, 21 de julio. El campamento será la última gira de la escuadra antes de partir al Mundial FIFA Sub-20 en septiembre próximo e incluye dos partidos internacionales ante Uruguay el 27 de julio y Australia el 29 de julio, como parte de la Copa Ciudad de Rosario.
Los tres jugadores rojiblancos salieron de las Fuerzas Básicas de Chivas USA. Flores firmó con el primer equipo a mediados de la temporada 2007, Mayén se integró en la pretemporada de 2008 y Zamora firmó con el primer equipo el 28 de mayo de 2009.
El campamento es la última gira de la selección Sub-20 antes del Mundial FIFA, que inicia a fines de septiembre en Egipto. Estados Unidos está en el complicado Grupo C y jugará en contra de Alemania el 26 de septiembre, ante Camerún el 29 de ese mismo mes y la República de Corea el 2 de octubre en la primera ronda.
