Chivas USA (9-7-3) defeated the New York Red Bulls (2-16-4) 2-0 tonight at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ before 10,556 fans. It was the last of three consecutive away games for Chivas USA before returning home to host Toronto FC on Saturday, August 22 at The Home Depot Center.
The Red-and-White broke a five-game losing streak and now has 30 points, tied at the moment with Colorado in third place in the Western Conference.
Midfielder and team captain Jesse Marsch played his 100th game with the Red-and-White and forward Chuckwudi Chijindu scored his first assist in his MLS career. In addition, forward Eduardo Lillingston scored his seventh goal of the season and Gerson Mayén contributed with his fifth assist in the league.
At the 15th minute of play, Chijindu passed the ball to Maykel Galindo, who blasted a shot past Red Bulls goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul from about eight yards and scored. It was Galindo’s third goal of the season. Just before the final whistle, midfielder Michael Lahoud crossed the ball to Eduardo Lillingston, who just tapped the ball and scored the second goal of the match.
Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on tonight’s match: “I’m very happy with the result. Things haven’t been going our way in the last couple of months. We haven’t played that many games. It has been very tough for us to get in the rhythm. Now that we don’t have any more breaks until the end of the season, we have to be solid and play better.”
