Chivas USA (10-7-3, 33 pts) earned its second consecutive 2-0 win, topping Toronto FC in front of 15,165 fans at The Home Depot Center, with midfielder Sacha Kljestan scoring his first two goals of the season. The win moves the team into second place in the Western Conference, two points behind the LA Galaxy, but the Red-and-White have three games in hand over their in-stadium rivals.

The Red-and-White’s first goal came in the 31st minute when midfielder Jesse Marsch tracked down a ball that looked to be heading out of bounds. His cross back into the middle found Maykel Galindo, who headed to Kljestan for a close-range finish to give Chivas the lead.

After going into the half with a 1-0 lead, Kljestan struck again in the second session after debutant Brazilian striker Maicon Santos played a perfectly weighted through ball to the midfielder. Kljestan took a touch into the box and hit a low shot past Toronto goalkeeper Stefan Frei for the 11th goal of his career.

In addition to Santos, Jesús Padilla also made his Chivas USA debut, playing 71 minutes at right midfielder. Padilla was acquired this week from Chivas de Guadalajara, while Santos, who had been training with the team since Aug. 3, also joined on loan.

Goalkeeper Lance Parker earned the first shutout of his professional career, playing in just his second MLS match. Toronto took 15 shots but none were on goal, though Parker made several stops on crosses and through balls to preserve the clean sheet.
Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on tonight’s match: “We had a couple new guys, and it’s not always easy to gel right away with your teammates, but I thought that both of those guys [Jesús Padilla and Maicon Santos]; the longer the game went, they settled in and played better.”
Next league home game: Since next Saturday’s Honda Super Clásico is technically an away game, Chivas USA next be home against the New England Revolution on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2009 at 12:00 noon PT. For more information, or to purchase tickets, please call 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or visit cdchivasusa.com.
