Chivas USA (11-9-5, 38 pts) earned a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls (4-17-6, 17 points) on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center. The result kept Chivas USA in a tie for 4th place in the Western Conference as the team continues to push for its fourth consecutive spot in the playoffs.

After a scoreless first half, the Red-and-White took the lead on a Sacha Kljestan goal from distance, his fourth strike of the season, with the assist going to forward Maykel Galindo in the 64th minute. Chivas USA had several more chances but were unable to finish any before New York struck back with a Juan Pablo Angel header in minute 84.

Chivas USA missed a chance to take a late win when Kljestan’s penalty kick deep into stoppage time went just wide of the net, though the Red-and-White finished with a 18-4 advantage in shots on the night.
The Red-and-White now turn to a match next Saturday night at D.C. United, where Chivas USA was able to earn a 3-0 victory in the corresponding fixture last season. The team’s next home game comes on Saturday, Oct. 10 against the Kansas City Wizards at 7:30 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center.

Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on tonight’s match: “It’s really hard to comment on a game like this because I thought that we were the better team the whole 90 minutes. It was tough for us to find a breakthrough and once we did we failed to score a second. We had so many opportunities and that’s what in the end cost us the game.”
