Chivas USA clinched a spot in the MLS Cup Playoffs for the fourth consecutive season with a 2-0 victory over the Kansas City Wizards on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center. With the win, the Red-and-White (13-9-5, 44 points) moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Western Conference alongside the Houston Dynamo and the LA Galaxy.
Sacha Kljestan starred on the offensive side of the ball for Chivas USA, setting up the team’s first goal in the 72nd minute, when rebound from a free kick was collected by Yamith Cuesta, who played the ball to Justin Braun for the goal. Just three minutes later, Kljestan took a through ball from Eduardo Lillingston and finished a low shot for his fifth goal of the year, matching his career high.
Chivas USA’s Zach Thornton celebrated his 36th birthday with another performance that strengthened his case for an MLS Goalkeeper of the Year title. The keeper earned his league-leading 12th shutout of the season and lowered his MLS-best goals against average to a miniscule 0.72, making two saves on the night.
