Red-and-White earn point in tough match

Chivas USA posted a 0-0 tie against the Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center, picking up a point as goalkeeper Zach Thornton earned the shutout for the Red-and-White. Since Seattle joined MLS last season, Chivas USA has not conceded a goal in four meetings between the club.

In a match that featured few chances for either team, Thornton was the star, making a stunning save on a great strike from Sounders midfielder Osvaldo Alonso in the 88th minute. Chivas USA had several chances throughout the game but could not beat Kasey Keller in the Seattle net, while Sounders midfielder Sanna Nyassi hit the post with a header in the 61st minute.

A small scuffle at the end of the match earned a red card for players on both teams, after what had generally been a clean match. Chivas USA’s Mariano Trujillo and Seattle’s Leo Gonzalez both got ejected and will miss their teams’ next match.

Defender Jonathan Bornstein entered the match in the 30th minute for Ante Jazic, who was suffering from flulike symptoms. In doing so, Bornstein played in his 114th career game with Chivas USA, tying Sacha Kljestan for first place in the all-time leaders in the category.

Forward Alan Gordon made his debut for Chivas USA after arriving at the club in a trade with the LA Galaxy, starting at forward and playing 79 minutes before being subbed out. Gordon had two shots, one on goal, in his first match with the Red-and-White.

The tie moved Chivas USA’s record to 5-10-4 on the season (19 points), and the team now looks to a match at FC Dallas next Saturday as the hunt for a spot in the playoffs continues. Dallas earned a 3-1 victory at D.C. United on Saturday and will face the Red-and-White for the second time this season, having won 2-1 at The Home Depot Center on June 26.

The Red-and-White will take Sunday and Monday off before returning to training on Tuesday at The Home Depot Center. The team will travel on Thursday ahead of Saturday’s match against FC Dallas, which will kick off at 5:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast live on Fox Soccer Channel, Fox Sports en Español, and W Radio 690 AM.

Next home game: Following the match in Dallas, Chivas USA takes on D.C. United on Sunday, August 29 at 7:00 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center. For more information, or tickets to the match, please call 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or visit cdchivasusa.com
