LA Galaxy at Chivas USA, 5 p.m. PT (ESPN2 / ESPN Deportes)

  • The LA Galaxy could end the season for their Home Depot Center neighbors for the second consecutive season.
  • After two victories in the 2007 series, Chivas USA have not defeated the LA Galaxy in the nine league and MLS Cup Playoffs meetings since. The Galaxy are 5-0-4 against their rivals in that span, including a 2-0 win on April 1.
  • Chivas USA were shut out for the second consecutive game and the fifth time in seven games in the loss at Philadelphia.
  • Facing the New York Red Bulls, the Galaxy had a center back pairing of Leonardo and Yohance Marshall that had just 10 combined league appearances. For this match, Omar Gonzalez is expected to be in the lineup after serving a one-game suspension for accumulation of yellow cards and Gregg Berhalter may return from injury.
  • After making substitute appearances in each of the last two games, David Beckham played the full 90 against New York. “In a perfect world, he would not have played that long. He showed tremendous character and quality in the last 20 minutes when by all rights, he should have been off the field,”said Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena.

Chivas USA @ Philadelphia post-game quotes

Forward Justin Braun

On the game:

“Obviously not the result we were looking for.  I thought we came out in the first half and were playing alright and the momentum was going our way but then they got that goal and a bad marking on our point and then we kind of let up and then they got that second one. It’s tough when you give up two soft goals like that when you kind of turn the momentum the other way.  I thought the second half we came out reorganized, came out controlling the move, moving the ball quick and getting forward.  So we were unfortunate not to get another goal.  They got that third one and kind of put the game out of reach for us.”

On the season:

“We’re trying to stay positive though.  We got to look at the positives and take those and move forward each week.”

Forward Alan Gordon

On the game:

“I think we started well.  We came out with a good attitude and started putting the pressure on them in their half.  We conceded a goal and then we were still in the game, and then the one right before halftime pretty much broke our spirit.  Two set piece goals.  I felt like we had the better of the play in the first half and the two goals were costly to us.  We dug ourselves a hole we couldn’t get out of. In the second half they came out and had more confidence and took the game over and pretty much took us for ride.”

On set pieces:

“We got two big guys up top and we were trying to whip in some crosses.  It’s unfortunate we weren’t able to put our heads on anything.”

 On the crowd:

“Everywhere you go there’s going to be an opposing crowd and this one’s no worse than Toronto or Seattle or anything like that.  But it’s a good atmosphere and the fans support their team and it’s good to see.”

Head Coach Martín Vásquez:

On the game:

“Disappointed.  We felt good coming here and we had a good start and we set the tone.  That was our game plan.  But we gave up three goals on set pieces and that’s not acceptable, especially at this stage of the season where we have defended hundreds of set pieces.  We were soft, and I mean no disrespect to the Union, but I’m upset because I thought we could have done better.”

On Union’s attack:

“Yeah, that’s what you analyze when you watch their style of play or the way they play or their tendencies or who their key players are.  We knew they were going to go forward with numbers, come out with energy.  We felt we took the pressure off by playing fast, playing simple, and getting behind them.  But the first goal during the season has always…we haven’t been able to shake it off.  And at the worst time we gave up a stupid foul and we gave up a soft goal.  And at halftime, to go back into the second half, sometimes it’s difficult, other times teams are able to shake it off and go after and change the game and sometimes the catch up.  Others, it’s difficult.  Today, for us, it’s very difficult.”

Chivas USA will now face the LA Galaxy on Sunday, Oct. 3rd, at 5:00 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center in the Honda SuperClásico.

Philadelphia Union won with three goals by Jaime Moreno, Fred, and Sebastien Le Toux, all of them on set pieces. The first goal came on a corner kick taken by Justin Mapp that Jaime Moreno headed into the net at the 25th minute.  The Union’s second goal came three minutes into stoppage time before the halftime whistle on a free kick on the right side taken by Le Toux. Zach Thornton blocked Le Toux’s violent shot but Fred was there to take the rebound and scored the second goal of the match at the 48th minute. Le Toux, again on a free kick, scored the third and final goal during the second half when he blasted a 24-yard free kick shot that deflected off Ante Jazic and past Thornton.

Defender Darío Delgado was subbed at halftime after suffering a right foot contusion on a foul committed by Justin Mapp. Head Coach Martín Vásquez made three substitutions in a span of nine minutes, when he substituted Delgado, Rodolfo Espinoza, and Sal Zizzo- who started his first league match- for Yamith Cuesta, Jesús Padilla, and Jonathan Bornstein. Chivas USA produced two shots on goal and was caught in seven off sides during the match.
