Chivas USA fell 1-0 on Saturday night to the New York Red Bulls before entering the MLS break for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. A 25-yard shot by Red Bulls midfielder Seth Stammler was the difference in the game, giving the home team the victory in front of 18,815 fans at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey. With the loss, the Red-and-White fall to 3-8-1 (W-L-T) on the season, good for 10 points in the Western Conference.
The Red Bulls scored the only goal of the match on a corner kick taken at the 27th minute by Red Bulls midfielder Joel Lindpere. Chivas USA defender Darío Delgado cleared the ball through the middle but Stammler blasted a left-footed shot from outside the box to beat Dan Kennedy, who couldn’t do anything to stop the lower left hand corner shot.
Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy reappeared for the Red-and-White since April 2, 2010 (vs. LA Galaxy) after recuperating from a left hip strain injury. Goalkeeper Zach Thornton was suspended for tonight’s game after getting a red card during the last game against D.C. United.
Alex Zotinca played his first match with Chivas USA after singing last Friday with the Red-and-White. Zotinca played his last Chivas USA match against Real Salt Lake on November 8, 2008 at the Home Depot Center during the 2008 MLS Cup Playoffs.
The team will travel on Sunday morning to Los Angeles for a three-week MLS break due to the World Cup. Chivas USA will attempt to stop a five game losing streak when it faces FC Dallas on Saturday, June 26, at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. Before that, the Red-and-White will play the San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday, June 12, in the inaugural Sacramento Cup at Raley Field in West Sacramento. Kickoff for the match is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT.
Chivas USA Head Coach Martín Vásquez, on tonight’s match: “[I’m] disappointed, it was a very important game for us, that would enable us to stop our losing streak. In my opinion we had a good game plan. We gave away a goal we kept on trying but New York’s back line was solid and we couldn’t get the ball in. [I’m] very disappointed with the result.”
Next home game: Chivas USA will next return to The Home Depot Center on June 26 at 7:30 p.m. PT when the team hosts FC Dallas. For more information on the game, or to purchase tickets, please call 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or visit cdchivasusa.com.

Chivas USA fought back from a deficit but gave up a late goal, falling to the defending MLS Champion Real Salt Lake by a 2-1 score on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center. With the loss, the Red-and-White fall to 3-6-1 (W-L-T) on the season, good for 10 points.
At the end of an even first half, Salt Lake took the lead when Chris Wingert finished a low shot after collecting a ball that had ricocheted off the post. It was Wingert’s first career MLS goal in his 147th match in the league.
Chivas USA forward Justin Braun, who had entered the match as a substitute in the 63rd minute, scored a great goal to tie the game at one. Collecting a ball at the top of the box in minute 80, the Salt Lake City native turned and fired a half volley to the far post, past RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando. Braun now has three goals and two assists on the season, tied for the team lead in both categories.
The Red-and-White could not hold the lead, however, as RSL’s Fabian Espindola received the ball behind the Chivas USA defense in the 89th minute and fired a low shot past goalkeeper Zach Thornton.
The match was the first for Chivas USA without team co-captains Jonathan Bornstein and Sacha Kljestan, who are currently with the United States National Team in Princeton, N.J. Both players are working to earn a spot on the U.S.’ final 23-player roster for the FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and the team will face the Czech Republic in a tune-up match on Wednesday.
Chivas USA defender and Anaheim native Carlos Borja made the first start of his MLS career, and his second all-time appearance, playing 90 minutes at left back in place of Jonathan Bornstein.
The team will travel on Sunday morning to Lake Elsinore for the first ‘Practice in the Community’ of 2010, where the entire Chivas USA first team will hold an open training session for fans. The event, which will take place at Temescal Canyon High School at 28755 El Toro Road in Lake Elsinore, begins at 10:30 a.m. PT.
The Red-and-White next face D.C. United on the road, next Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET (4:30 p.m. PT), in a match that will be broadcast on Prime Ticket, KWHY, and W Radio 690 AM.
Chivas USA Head Coach Martín Vásquez, on tonight’s match: “We came out flat, and they took advantage. That was the difference. Playing against a team like Houston you can’t come out flat…. We created plays, but… we couldn’t tie the game.”

Chivas USA earned its biggest road victory in history, taking a 4-0 win on Cinco de Mayo against the New England Revolution at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. Jesús Padilla had two goals, and Justin Braun scored once and added two assists as the Red-and-White won for the first time ever in Gillette Stadium.
The 4-0 scoreline matched the largest ever margin of victory for Chivas USA, tying a 5-1 win over Real Salt Lake on July 9, 2005, and a 4-0 victory over RSL on April 22, 2007, both home games. It was the highest goal total for the Red-and-White since the April 22, 2007 match.
The Red-and-White started the scoring in minute 26, when Justin Braun knocked down a long ball from goalkeeper Zach Thornton for Jesús Padilla, who dribbled past New England goalkeeper Preston Burpo to give Chivas USA the 1-0 lead. The Red-and-White went up a man soon after when Revs midfielder Marko Perovic received a red card for an elbow to Ben Zemanski.
Braun scored the second goal of the game in the 33rd minute, receiving a pass from Mariano Trujillo before running through the Revolution defense and past Burpo to made the game 2-0. Padilla struck again just after halftime for his second goal of the game, and third of the season, with assists going to captain Sacha Kljestan and Braun.
Chivas USA closed the scoring in the 81st minute when rookie Blair Gavin scored the first goal of his MLS career, winning a ball at the top of the box, turning quickly, and curling a left-footed shot to the far post. On the other end of the field, goalkeeper Zach Thornton made two saves to earn the 72nd shutout of his career.
Newly-signed midfielder José Macotelo made his MLS debut, entering the match in the 67th minute for Jesús Padilla. Macotelo joined the team in Chicago after signing on loan from Puntarenas F.C. in Costa Rica last week.
Chivas USA Head Coach Martín Vasquez, on tonight’s match: “[This game] gives you confidence, and we have to start preparing for Saturday. It’s going to come fast and against one of our biggest opponents, we have to have our top game.”

Chivas USA put together its best 90 minutes of soccer as the team topped the San Jose Earthquakes by a 3-2 score on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center. Sacha Kljestan, Justin Braun and Chukwudi Chijindu scored their first goals of the season for the Red-and-White, who improve to 2-3-0 (W-L-T) in 2010.
The Red-and-White took the 1-0 lead on a great shot from Huntington Park native Sacha Kljestan in the 25th minute, when the team captain took a pass from Blair Gavin and shot past Earthquakes goalkeeper Joe Cannon from 20 yards. San Jose equalized just before halftime on a hotly contested penalty kick which was converted by Chris Wondolowski.
Nine minutes into the second half, Justin Braun headed home a Mariano Trujillo cross to restore Chivas USA’s lead. The goal was Braun’s fourth all-time against San Jose, which leads the team. Defender and co-captain Jonathan Bornstein also assisted on the play.

In the 87th minute, second-year midfielder Michael Lahoud played a long ball that found Chukwudi Chijindu behind the San Jose defense, and the forward finished a low shot past Joe Cannon to give the Red-and-White a two-goal cushion. With Chijindu’s goal, Chivas USA scored three goals in a match for the first time since October 4, 2008 at D.C. United.
Late into injury time, the Earthquakes earned a consolation goal when Steven Beitashour struck a hard shot from distance after a clearance to pull San Jose within a goal. The match ended at 3-2, giving Chivas USA its second home win in as many chances.
Rookie midfielders Blair Gavin and Ben Zemanski, both coming out of the University of Akron, manned central midfield for the Red-and-White, and Anaheim’s Carlos Borja made his MLS debut, entering the match in the 79th minute for Carlos Borja.
Chivas USA Head Coach Martín Vásquez, on tonight’s match: “I think we earned the win, and we got a good result. I think this is going to help our team… if we continue to believe in what we’re doing, we’re going to have a good chance to be successful.” A full series of quotes from Vásquez, as well as soundbytes from Sacha Kljestan, Chukwudi Chijindu, Mariano Trujillo, and Darío Delgado, are available on Dentro del Rebaño (‘Inside the Flock’), the official blog of Chivas USA.

Chivas USA dropped a 2-0 decision to the LA Galaxy at The Home Depot Center on Thursday night, unable to find a goal despite having good possession the game and a number of chances, especially in the final 20 minutes. Blair Gavin, the Red-and-White’s first pick in the 2010 MLS SuperDraft, made his MLS debut and played 90 minutes in central defense.
The Galaxy took the lead early, scoring on a Buddle header against the run of play in the seventh minute. After the goal, both teams attempted to take control of the match, and both teams fought hard in the midfield but struggled to find chances.
The match opened up in the second half, and Chivas USA found several opportunities but could not find a way past Donovan Ricketts in the Galaxy net, who picked up his second shutout in two matches. Jesús Padilla, Maicon Santos, and Sacha Kljestan all had chances turned away by the goalkeeper.

After a string of Chivas USA shots, the Galaxy iced the game in the 87th minute on a counter attack, with Landon Donovan getting behind the defense and feeding Buddle in the center of the field for the second goal of the game.
Blair Gavin made his MLS debut for the Red-and-White, playing 90 minutes in central midfield and turning in one of the top performances of the match. Making strong tackles and accurate passes, the rookie from the University of Akron dueled with Galaxy veterans Chris Birchall and Dema Kovalenko for the entire match.
Chivas USA Head Coach Martín Vásquez, on tonight’s match: “I’m disappointed with the result, but I think we’re on the right track…. We were very unlucky, very unfortunate not to get a goal. It would’ve changed everything, because we would’ve gotten that momentum and who knows, we could’ve had the opportunity to finish it off.”
