Chivas USA vs. SJ

Playoff-bound Chivas USA came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes at The Home Depot Center on Saturday night, moving temporarily into sole possession of first place in the Western Conference with a 13-9-6 record (45 points) ahead of tomorrow’s match between the LA Galaxy and the Houston Dynamo. The Red-and-White are now undefeated in six games with a 3-0-3 record.

The Red-and-White took a 1-0 lead in the 7th minute when Maykel Galindo took a long through ball from Sacha Kljestan and finished low past San Jose goalkeeper Andrew Weber. The Earthquakes then scored two unanswered goals on headers, one from Brandon McDonald in the 21st minute, and another in minute 58 from Ryan Johnson.

Chivas USA vs. SJ 2

Chivas USA forward Justin Braun tied the game at two in the 66th minute, knocking a header past Weber off an Ante Jazic cross. The Red-and-White had several chances in the final minutes, and outshot San Jose 20-8 on the night, but were unable to find the winning goal.

With the tie, the Red-and-White moved into first place in the Western Conference, one point ahead of the LA Galaxy and the Houston Dynamo, who play in Houston on Sunday. Chivas USA has two games left in the regular season; visiting the Chicago Fire on Thursday, Oct. 22 before returning to The Home Depot Center for Fan Appreciation Day on Sunday, Oct. 25 at 12:00 noon PT.

With the Red-and-White already having clinched a spot in the postseason, playoff tickets are now on sale with prices at the same rates as the regular season. Great seats start as low as $15; fans can purchase tickets by visiting cdchivasusa.com, or by calling 1-877-CHIVAS-1.

Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on tonight’s match: “In the second half, there were all kind of changes, we changed the system a little bit, we changed the players a little bit… I think we responded pretty good and we increased the tempo and got ourselves a goal.”

Chivas USA will have Sunday and Monday off before training at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at The Home Depot Center and traveling later in the day to Chicago. After facing the Fire on Thursday, the Red-and-White will return to Los Angeles on Friday and train Saturday at 10:00 a.m. before Sunday’s game against Houston.

Just three minutes later, Kljestan took a through ball from Eduardo Lillingston and finished a low shot for his fifth goal of the year, matching his career high.

Chivas USA (11-9-5, 38 pts) earned a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls  (4-17-6, 17 points) on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center. The result kept Chivas USA in a tie for 4th place in the Western Conference as the team continues to push for its fourth consecutive spot in the playoffs.

Chivas USA missed a chance to take a late win when Kljestan’s penalty kick deep into stoppage time went just wide of the net, though the Red-and-White finished with a 18-4 advantage in shots on the night.

The Red-and-White now turn to a match next Saturday night at D.C. United, where Chivas USA was able to earn a 3-0 victory in the corresponding fixture last season. The team’s next home game comes on Saturday, Oct. 10 against the Kansas City Wizards at 7:30 p.m. PT at The Home Depot Center.

Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on tonight’s match: “It’s really hard to comment on a game like this because I thought that we were the better team the whole 90 minutes. It was tough for us to find a breakthrough and once we did we failed to score a second. We had so many opportunities and that’s what in the end cost us the game.”

Chivas USA scored once early and once late to earn a 2-0 victory over the New England Revolution on Sunday afternoon at The Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., giving the Red-and-White a boost in the team’s search for a fourth consecutive spot in the playoffs.

The Red-and-White improve to 11-9-3 (W-L-T) on the season, good for 36 points and a tie for fourth place in the Western Conference with the Colorado Rapids. Chivas USA sits four points behind Houston, two behind the LA Galaxy, and one behind Seattle Sounders FC, but have two games in hand on the three teams it trails in the standings.

 kljestan_9Q3532

Forward Maicon Santos scored his first goal in a Chivas USA uniform in the 10th minute of the match, hitting a first-time shot off a pass from fellow striker Justin Braun. Maicon now has a goal and an assist in four matches with the Red-and-White, while Braun earned his first assist of the season in his first game since June 6, missing time due to a concussion.

Despite having many other chances and limiting New England to just two shots (and none on goal), Chivas USA was not able to grab a second goal until the 94th minute, when a Sacha Kljestan pass sprung Eduardo Lillingston in alone on New England goalkeeper Matt Reis. Lillingston touched the ball past Reis but was fouled by the keeper, and Kljestan slotted home the resulting penalty kick to ice the match.

Goalkeeper Zach Thornton lowered his league-leading goals against average to 0.82 on the season, having conceded just 16 goals in 1755 minutes of MLS action. Thornton is also tied for the league lead in shutouts with Houston’s Pat Onstad, with nine, and is also tied with San Jose’s Joe Cannon for second on the all-time MLS shutout list, with 67 clean sheets in his career.

The Red-and-White travel this weekend for a vital Western Conference clash at Seattle Sounders FC, kicking off on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 12:00 noon PT on Fox Soccer Channel. The team then returns to face Chivas de Guadalajara in the historic ‘ChivaClásico’ on Wednesday, Sept. 23, at 8:00 p.m. PT at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena. Chivas USA fell by a 1-0 score to the LA Galaxy in the third and final Honda Super Clásico of 2009 on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center. The win earned the Super Clásico trophy for the Galaxy, who finished with two wins and a draw against Chivas USA this season.

After a scoreless first half, David Beckham scored the game’s only goal, and his first of the season, in the 80th minute. Off a throw-in, a rebound fell to the Galaxy midfielder just outside the box, and his bouncing shot hit the far post and went into the net. The Red-and-White out-shot the Galaxy 8-3 in the first half, but the Galaxy held a 7-1 advantage in the second half.

Defender Yamith Cuesta, acquired on loan from Expreso Rojo in Colombia, made his debut for Chivas USA in tonight’s match, playing 90 minutes in central defense.

Chivas USA will be without Maykel Galindo, who received a red card in the 82nd minute of tonight’s game, as well as midfielder Marcelo Saragosa, who will be suspended due to yellow card accumulation.

Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on tonight’s match: “There’s not really much to say. I told the guys; sometimes the game is cruel. There is no way we deserved to lose this game. But that’s the way it goes.”
