Chivas USA fell 3-1 tonight to the Charleston Battery of the USL First Division in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, South Carolina. The Red-and-White will return to Los Angeles tomorrow morning to prepare for the highly anticipated second Honda Super Clásico match of the season against the LA Galaxy on July 11 at The Home Depot Center. The Red-and-White was looking to advance past the Third Round of the knockout tournament for the first time since 2005. Charleston is currently in second place in the USL First Division and advanced to the final of last year’s Open Cup, losing to D.C. United for the championship. Forward Randi Patterson scored twice during the first half at the 9 and 45 minute, and was enough to give his team the victory. The first goal came on a rebound after a corner kick. Patterson received the ball and took a shot that beat Chivas USA goalkeeper Lance Parker. The second goal was scored just before the halftime whistle on a pass by Darren Spicer to Patterson, who shot before entering the box and scored his second goal of the night. Jesse Marsch had tied the game 1-1 at the 28th minute on a pass by Sasha Victorine. Chivas USA goalkeeper Lance Parker made his second start of year with the Red-and-White after he played last Saturday in SuperLiga against San Luis. Defender Bobby Burling also reappeared with Chivas USA on his first game in 2009 after recuperating from a sports hernia surgery. Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on tonight’s match: “Overall, I thought we were the better team the whole game. They got lucky breaks… I thought we played really well… We made them chase the game…They just defended the second half and they didn’t want to play.”

Bojan Stepanovic also assisted on the goal in his first start with Chivas USA.
Zach Thornton made two saves to earn the shutout, including a point blank stop on a Sebastian Le Toux header just before the first half ended. Thornton, with three shutouts on the season, is tied with Seattle’s Kasey Keller, who missed the match due to a red card last week against Kansas City, for first in MLS. Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on tonight’s match: “[The players] are working their socks off for each other, and that’s a really good thing to see. Chivas USA continued its undefeated start to the season and reached the top spot in MLS with a 0-0 draw ‘at’ the LA Galaxy in The Home Depot Center, improving the team’s record to 3-0-1 (W-L-T). The Red-and-White now host Seattle Sounders FC on Saturday, April 18 at The Home Depot Center. Seattle currently sits second in the West with a 3-1-0 (W-L-T) record, following Seattle’s 1-0 loss Saturday night at home against Kansas City. A total of nine cards were given out over the course of tonight’s match, including three red cards. Chivas USA midfielder Paulo Nagamura was dismissed just before halftime for his second yellow card, while the Galaxy’s Alan Gordon received his second yellow in minute 71, and Galaxy defender Gregg Berhalter received a straight red for a tackle in the 79th minute that prevented a breakaway for Red-and-White forward Alecko Eskandarian.
Though neither team found the back of the net, both teams had many chances, with Chivas USA holding the edge in shots, 12-8. Eduardo Lillingston, Paulo Nagamura, and Sacha Kljestan all forced diving saves from Galaxy goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts, while Zach Thornton recorded four saves for the Red-and-White to earn his second shutout of the year.
This was the second of five matches for Chivas USA in the month of April, four of which will take place at The Home Depot Center. After a 2-1 home win over Columbus and the 0-0 ‘away’ draw against the Galaxy, the Red-and-White next hosts the expansion Seattle Sounders on Saturday, April 18. Tickets for the match can be purchased at cdchivasusa.com or by calling 1-877-CHIVAS-1. The team then closes the month with an April 22 match at Toronto and an April 25 home match against FC Dallas. “I knew the emotions would be pretty high… I thought we were solid, and obviously at the end of the game, when now we have a man up, it looked like a [hockey] power play. We had three or four good chances to score and we didn’t, so we’ve got to give them credit.” (For a full quote sheet, please visit cdchivasusa.com.)
