Chivas USA fell by a 1-0 score to the LA Galaxy in the third and final Honda Super Clásico of 2009 on Saturday night at The Home Depot Center. The win earned the Super Clásico trophy for the Galaxy, who finished with two wins and a draw against Chivas USA this season.

With the loss, Chivas USA drops to 10-9-3 (W-L-T) on the season, sitting tied for fourth place in the Western Conference with 33 points. The Red-and-White have two games in hand on every team they trail in the division, and with eight games remaining in the season, Chivas USA remains in the middle of the hunt for a playoff spot.

After a scoreless first half, David Beckham scored the game’s only goal, and his first of the season, in the 80th minute. Off a throw-in, a rebound fell to the Galaxy midfielder just outside the box, and his bouncing shot hit the far post and went into the net. The Red-and-White out-shot the Galaxy 8-3 in the first half, but the Galaxy held a 7-1 advantage in the second half.

Defender Yamith Cuesta, acquired on loan from Expreso Rojo in Colombia, made his debut for Chivas USA in tonight’s match, playing 90 minutes in central defense.

The Red-and-White have more than two weeks before their next game, when the team hosts the New England Revolution on Sunday, Sept. 13. Chivas USA will be without Maykel Galindo, who received a red card in the 82nd minute of tonight’s game, as well as midfielder Marcelo Saragosa, who will be suspended due to yellow card accumulation.

Chivas USA Head Coach Preki, on tonight’s match: “There’s not really much to say. I told the guys; sometimes the game is cruel. There is no way we deserved to lose this game. But that’s the way it goes.”

In addition to its league games, the Red-and-White will also face Chivas de Guadalajara on Wednesday, Sept. 23 at 8:00 p.m. PT at the Rose Bowl Stadium in Pasadena, Calif. The ‘ChivaClásico’ is part of Guadalajara’s 2009 U.S. tour, and will be the first time the two teams have ever faced off in the United States.
